Under the moniker Yolanda Be Cool, the Australian duo Sylvester Martinez and Johnson Peterson took the world by storm with their international chart-topping hit of 2010, ‘We No Speak Americano,’ which was created in conjunction with fellow electronic producer DCUP. It was a thumping house track with a gypsy-swing vibe that was instantly catchy. It was near impossible to escape hearing it, whatever age or creed, played on thousands of sound systems every night across the world. Their 2013 remix of Cyndi Lauper’s classic ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ is a gleefully guilty listen and you won’t be able to resist cheesin’ along as you shuffle your feet.
Live, Yolanda Be Cool have been known to don waistcoat and tie, supported by a double bass and two saxophones, as they perform their 2010 hit in a highly spirited manner. But otherwise, the pair is usually behind the decks, playing their brand of accessible, upbeat house which is often met by jumping adulation from the crowd. Being in the audience at one of their sets is full of fun and silliness, which is exactly the atmosphere that their music creates. They are currently still on their summer US tour, during which they played to a lively crowd in the desert at Burning Man festival.
