Biography
Born and raised in Cayey, Puerto Rico, Wisin first met Yandel a.k.a. Llandel Veguilla Malevé during school where the two shared musical interests and later began performing in clubs. Following years of honing their rapping and live performance skills, in 2000, Wisin & Yandel issued their debut album “Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio”. Charting at No. 35 on the Latin Albums Chart, the record wasn’t a huge success, however garnered a great deal of attention for the group who subsequently signed with the Universal subsidiary, Machete Music. With significantly more promotion and distribution, Wisin & Yandel’s sophomore album, “Mi Vida… My Life”, did wonders for the duo’s national profile and was marked by more pop themes than later releases.
It wasn’t however until Wisin & Yandel’s third full-length “Pa’l Mundo”, featuring more aggression that the pair earned their mainstream breakthrough in 2005. Led by the singles, “Rakata”, “Mirala Bien”, and "Llamé Pa’ Verte (Bailando Sexy)”, the record went on to sell over three million copies and peaked at No. 30 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Content on riding the wave of this success, the reggaeton duo subsequently released a string of well-received albums including 2007’s “Los Extraterrestres”, 2009’s “La Revolución”, 2011’s “Los Vaqueros: El Regress”, and 2012’s “Lideres”. The releases proved Wisin & Yandel to be one of the most successful reggaeton groups of all time, having collaborated with the likes R. Kelly, Gloria Estefan, and 50 Cent.
Prior to the release of “Pa’l Mundo” in 2005, Wisin had already put the wheels in motion for a successful solo career, led by his debut full-length “El Sobreviviente” in 2004. Due to disappointing sales however, Wisin’s solo ambitions were put on hold until Wisin & Yandel went on a hiatus in 2013, following their “Lideres” tour. As a result, Wisin recorded a second solo album, “El Regreso del Sobreviviente”, which later earned it release in March 2014. Featuring the likes of Chris Brown, Pitbull, and Sean Paul, the record peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard 200 and led by the popular single “Andrenalina” featuring Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.
