Biography
Born in New York in 1979, she is the daughter of legendary Sitar performer and friend of The Beatles Ravi Shankar who obviously passed down some of his immense musical talent. A fan of Jazz from an early age, she went on to attend the University of North Texas, majoring in Jazz Piano and meeting future musical partner, Jesse Harris along the way.
She soon headed back to New York and was picked up by legendary Jazz Label ‘Blue Note Records’ who released her first album ‘Come Away With Me’ in 2002. It was a huge critical and commercial success, eventually hitting number one in the Billboard Charts before earning Grammy Awards for, amongst others, Album and Record of the year.
The success of her follow up ‘Feels Like Home’ earned her, not only a place atop the Billboard charts once again, but a spot on Time Magazine’s list of ‘Most Influential People of 2004’. And of course it picked up a few more Grammy awards along the way.
Her successes continued with the release of each subsequent album, even when she broke from her regular formula such as in the case of ‘…Featuring’, a compilation of numerous collaborations with the likes of the Foo Fighters and Outkast.
Norah has made a career for herself that carries on the rich musical heritage bestowed upon her from her father and shows no signs of slowing up anytime soon.
Live reviews
My first concert of Norah Jones, Paradiso Amsterdam.
Please don't hate my review, I do love you to visit your concerts and hope you soon come back again.
Norah came on stage, looking in good and fit! Her voice at this concert is 100%, that's super!
But... it looks like all songs are on automatic pilot :(
Although she said that she loved to be in Amsterdam it took a lot of time for the audience to get in the mood.
And because of the piano position (understandable), half of the concert hall visitors only see her back.
Great that she had merchandise (last time at Simply Red there was none), and I bought a great t-shirt, thanks!
I miss a little more interaction with us to break the ice, a pause in between, and maybe turn the piano in the second half for the audience? (I was in the middle, so I was good)
And most of the songs are with all 3 instruments out loud. I think that I miss the Jazz sound by that. And hope next time you play more parts with partly pause one or two of the instruments, to create more jazzrelaxe sound.
So don't hate me for my review. I love to see you back in Amsterdam.
Geetali Norah Jones Shankar, better known as Norah Jones is a talented singer/songwriter with an indescribable ability to cross genres and instruments during her live performance. Despite having three albums top the UK albums chart, she is an elusive visitor to the British isles much to the disappointment of fans. However when she does pop over, the crowds arrive in their droves to see their favourite singer/songwriter perform live.
The Grammy award winner has never been one for unnecessary show so the stage set-up is expectedly minimal as Norah leads her accompanying band to their position. The audience cheers wildly at her appearance to which Norah's reply is a coy smile and quick thank you before she gets to work on a rendition of alt-jazz number 'Who Am I to You?'.
It seems as though she is compensating for her time away as she performs over 20 songs ranging from all of her career. Huge cheers raise the roof for songs such as 'Sunrise' and 'Sinking Soon'. Norah leaves the stage with the feeling that she is always more than welcome when visiting the UK.
Norah Jones is incredible to watch on stage precisely because she blends and crosses so many different musical genres and instruments, showing off her very real, raw talent as a singer, songwriter and musician. The Grammy winning artist is relatively understated, she does not perform a lot so when she does tour her fans are always wildly excited. Her set was minimal, in order for her to showcase her incredible talent. There were no flashy lights or gimmicks. All we needed was Jones, her guitar, piano and her incredible vocals. Jones encompasses Jazz, Country and Pop in her music. She is queen of the acoustics and her voice is both powerful and mellow. She has a soft tone to her vocals that is breath-taking to hear in real life, but can still hit those hard notes. Jones sung a number of classics, and a range of songs that spanned her whole career. Highlights of the night included ‘Come Away with Me’, ‘Don’t Know Why’, ‘Sunrise’ and ‘What Am I to You?’
Like all of the best artists, Norah Jones cannot be put in a box. There is no putting her into a box because she is not simply a singer, nor a songwriter, a musician, or performer: she is all of those. And her music is not just pop, country, rock, folk, blues, jazz or any other genre you can put a song into. She manages to combine all of her influences into her music while still giving the music a character that is uniquely her own.
She is capable of incredible delicacy and sophistication. With songs like, "Sunrise" which contains a chorus in a 7/4 time signature, so it's no surprise that she can and has performed with a diverse range of other artists including Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, The Foo Fighters, Wynton Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt, Herbie Hancock and Willie Nelson just to mention a few. Personally, I love her voice! She's amazing! Great music whether you're up, down, relaxing, or pumping yourself up, Norah will take care of you.
Beautiful performer, played some beautiful songs. Was obviously having a bad day or overtired because in a little over an hour she said about 3 sentences other than introducing the band after about the 4th or 5th songs.
It would have been nice to have have her introduce her new songs with the title and not just that it's on the internet! Or 'this is our last song' and get up say 'goodbye ' and walk off. At least there was an encore. It was like paying to watch a very expensive, professional open mic or watching them practice I've been to a fair few concerts so it was a bit odd
Norah was FANTASTIC!!! Beautiful voice, played all of my favorite songs, absolutely wonderful.
The audience, in the other hand, left a lot to be desired. Extremely rude, talking, up and down in their seats, coming in late to the show, just terrible. I thought my wife was going to take out the chatty-kathys behind us. The show was in NJ and I've never seen a more disrespectful group of people.
Thankfully I did not let it ruin my enjoyment of the show.
Cash and dash one-star performer... She sounded really good but sadly I will never see another show. I know musicians are contracted to perform a minimum time, generally 90 min. That being said a musician who does the minimum at a theater like Red Rocks isn't a musician they are money hungry and don't care about the fans. I do not recommend! as you should save your money and download her music in free format only.
The show was amazing and Norah is an incredibly talented and versatile musician. Norah & her talented band played for almost 2 hours. The fun part, was seeing the Dream Park fireworks behind the stage during the concert and the fireworks after the concert. It was a wonderful, magical night.
Disappointed.....nothing magic just as the vinyle at home. The atmosphère was really warm because of the weather so not so good for the audience, it would be great to have more interaction between the stage and the audience but nothing. Overall the performance was cold.
