Sapp was born in Grand Rapids in Michigan, USA on 28 January 1967. He spent his childhood and teen years singing with at church with various gospel groups. In 1991 he was asked to sing with the gospel group Commissioned. He sung with the group until 1996 and appeared on three of their albums, which were called ‘Number 7’,’ Matters of the Heart’, and ‘Irreplaceable Love’. After he quit the group, he decided to establish himself as a solo artist of contemporary gospel music.
As of 2014 he has recorded seven studio albums and achieved enormous success in his genre. Whilst his music is Christian at its core, and he sings songs of worship, his music also contains crossovers with R&B and Hip Hop. His 2007 hit ‘Never Would Have Made It’ earned him his first dose of real fame as the song was a crossover of the genres. It peaked at number 14 on the R&B/ Hip Hop US chart and at number one on the US Gospel chart. The song featured on his 2007 album ‘Thirsty’ which sold over half a million copies during the time of its release, making it his best-selling album ever.
Sapp has won several awards, most notably his seven Gospel Stellar Awards and two BET Awards.
There are so many huge gospel singers out there but there is one that has to be acknowledged and that is a man who goes by the name “Marvin Louis Sapp”, who is a singer songwriter from Grand Rapids in Michigan. He is rightly so the recipient of the Best Gospel Artist of 2008 and 2010. He also received a Dove Award for Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year. Can he do it live? Of course he can! Sapp sings ever so passionately tonight with a twenty-piece gospel choir behind him. “Never Would Have Made It” is the huge hit that brings the house down. His range is so powerful, spanning 4 octaves with absolutely no problem. The audience are on their feet all the way through this song, lapping it up. Hands are in the air for this whole track, with an emotional delivery from all involved. Technically, the performance isn’t perfectly on point but emotionally, there isn’t a dry eye in the house.
Pastor Shirley Caesar is my favourite artist of all times. I am in South Africa but want to see her concert again. She Blesses my soul. I saw her in concert once in South Africa and at Madison Square in 2006 but I know I need more of that anointing. Love her to bits
I have been a fan of Deitrick Haddon since day 1. Glad to have finally seen in him at the McDonalds Concert here in Memphis area. It was wonderful seeing him. The concert was fantastic!!! He allowed the Lord use him.
It's so special to see pure talent beginning to blossom and luckily I am barely in the Islington Assembly Halls when Anoushka Lucas takes her spot in the support slot. It is a real treat as she offers a unique sound and a number of self penned songs including 'Brixton Hill'. Despite initial shyness it is clear that the audience have warmed to her and she has done her job very well by the close of her set. I am ready for Avery. Having seen and reviewed Ms Sunshine twice before I feel confident that she will deliver. I am ready to be entertained and she is more than able to satisfy. The whole gig drips of quality, truth and oozes with pure soul. This gig is the first time that the songs from the new cd 'the Sunroom' get the full band treatment as well as the classic favourites from the first cd. Tonight between snippets of Anita, Gladys, Maroon 5 and the acoustic Luretha Jackson medley encore we get Avery and that is so damn good that at times I find it hard to control myself. I am swept away in her Sunshine movement. She makes me smile in the knowledge that reminiscence is a beautiful thing when she sings 'Pining' and I really don't care who knows it! Each song showcases the most amazing vocal performance that I have witnessed since she was last here....but tonight Avery moves way beyond that first time and is even more accomplished. I am happy to hear that she is in Love and this shines through when she moves to the Grand Piano and tells us what this means on 'Nothing into Something' and 'Call My Name'. It reminds me of her support slot for Anthony David at the Jazz Cafe a few years back and her rendition of 'Ugly Part of Me'. I often watch that on You Tube as I was there and it shone as a moment with a truly sincere, soulful storyteller. Tonight the whole gig was chock full of moments. I really do not think I could have whooped harder or louder. She is outstanding on 'Safe in His Arms'; 'See You When I Get There' is wonderfully accepting of each persons different journey in this big old world and beautifully served with relish. An evening in the company of a truly beautiful, genuine star that shines like Ms Sunshine is a happening that all of London needs to experience. Even as I write this it is with pure tears of joy.....happiness....optimism....love....love....love...'Won't You Try Love'....thanks Avery xx.
