Dragged to a GRITS concert by my brother, I stood sullenly, hands in pockets and head downcast. Rap and hip-hop were not my areas of expertise and I felt as out of place as a vicar in a nightclub. My brother absolutely loved them, and I have to admit I kind of did too. Their music was old school: fun, catchy and, if you let yourself go, easy to dance to. Whilst I was possibly the least cool person in the crowd, who were going absolutely crazy for these guys I must add, I soon forgot my awkwardness and ended up having a brilliant time. From their opening with ‘Tennessee Bwoys’ to their ending with biggest hit ‘My life be like ooh-ahh’ GRITS had the entire crowd in the palm of their hands. Informed by my wise ass brother that GRITS stood for ‘Grammatical Revolution In The Spirit’, I couldn’t argue with that. Some kind of revolution of my spirit had taken place that night: I found myself downloading and repeatedly listening to their songs for the next few days after the gig! ‘My life be like ooh-ahh’ in particular stuck in my head on a constant loop for weeks. Made up of Stacey "Coffee" Jones and Teron "Bonafide" Carter, GRITS is a must see for those hip-hop/rap lovers out there. And even for those non-lovers, just give it a go. You might be surprised.
