Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Perla Batalla was born in L.A. to a family immersed in music. Her dad, a Mexican mariachi and an Argentine mom who ran the family’s Spanish language record shop on LA’s westside.
After performing with Leonard Cohen for more than a decade, Perla launched a solo career with Cohen’s encouragement. Since then she has recorded 7 albums, staged 2 one-woman shows and performed in venues worldwide. Most recently, Perla has been touring “In the House of Cohen”, an intimate Cohen retrospective.
Cindy Lee Berryhill runs the gamut; one of the founding members of New York’s Antifolk movement and a San Diego Music Hall of Fame recipient. Her music often runs along a similarly wide spectrum; a deeply personal point of view and an edgy wit leaved with compassionate character sketches and bemused observation. She will be unveiling songs from her newly recorded album alongside co-producer and keyboardist Willie Aron, flutist and mandolinist John Kruth, and cellist Renata Bratt.
What a delight. We went to Joe’s Pub last night to hear songs composed and written by Leonard Cohen. I’m embarrassed to admit I hadn’t heard of Perla Batalla. Well, I know her now. What a voice! What a storyteller! What an entertainer! She made the beauty of Leonard Cohen’s songs even more wonderful.
