Igor Levit “guides the public to the heart of Beethoven” (Le Figaro) with a piano sonata cycle for the ages. Tonight, experience part four of Levit’s complete cycle of Beethoven’s sonatas, which spans two seasons at Carnegie Hall. The performance begins with “The Tempest” Sonata, followed by Piano Sonata No. 11, which Beethoven considered the finest of his early sonatas. Piano Sonata No. 3—the last of the Op. 2 sonatas—is a grandly scaled work, with a finale whose “treacherous choral writing [is] dispatched with tremendous panache” by Levit (Gramophone). The concert concludes with the “Pathétique,” an all-time repertoire favorite that looks ahead to the Romantics in its intensity.
