Biografie
Miller spent approximately 15 years performing as a session musician using his classic training on the clarinet, keyboard, saxophone and guitar to learn the crafts of the performing musician. He gained many wonderful opportunities during this time, including being part of the Saturday Night Live band from 1978 and 1979 and writing a track for the queen of soul Aretha Franklin.
He has also contributed bass on recording by Luther Vandross, Roberta Flack, Carly Simon and Bryan Ferry to name a few and his impressive contact list won him the Most Valuable Player award from NARAS three years in a row.
It wasn't until the 1990s that Miller decided to focus on his own music and began to assemble his own band for touring commitments. He has released over twenty albums to date and his tours are incredibly popular in mainland Europe and Japan.
In 1997 Miller took a short break from his solo work to become part of a collaborative project entitled Legends headed up by Eric Clapton. It also featured pianist Joe Sample, saxophone player David Sanborn and drummer Steve Gadd. The group took part in eleven major jazz festivals throughout Europe.
Miller has had equal success in the film industry, scoring huge box office successes such as 'The Great White Hype' 'The Trumpet of the Swan' 'Head Of State' and most recently 'Obsessed' featuring Beyoncé Knowles.

Marcus Miller is a legend in American jazz, and has played with musicians like Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, Frank Sinatra, and Michael Jackson. As such, I went into the concert expecting nothing less than one of the best to ever play jazz and he fully lived up to that billing.
The atmosphere in the building was unique and kind of hard to describe; mostly, it felt like everybody was upbeat, having a great time, and yet making sure to soak everything in and appreciate that they were listening to one of the titans of jazz music. As to be expected from such a big name, the venue was huge but the acoustics were great and all of the details and subtleties of the notes carried throughout the whole room.
Every single musician he had on stage with him was also a master of his art, and so the amount of pure musical talent collected in one place was really remarkable.
I was only a casual jazz fan before going to this show but listening to Marcus Miller and everybody he had playing with him converted me into a complete, rabid jazz fanatic. As proof of the man’s love for music, he still tours a lot even nowadays, so there is absolutely no excuse not to see him in person.
Show was fantastic. My great disapointment was with my seating and tickets. A made a point of coming to the garage to see the seating arrangement BEFORE I bought my tickets to make sure I would not be stuck in the middle of a long isle with people climbing over my wife and myself. So I looked at seating chart and looked at the actual seating, then SPECIFICKLY ask for and purchased two seats at the end of isle in section 2. To my great disapointment, the isle was now gone, filled in with extra seats. We were now in the middle of a Long isle. And our vision was blocked by others who were busy making video while blocking us. As a patron for last 3-4 years, I've been recommending you guys to all my friends, Friday was a big disapointment from the last 7 or 8 shows we've enjoyed as avid SMOOTH JAZZ fans. Hope we don't have that problem again. Looking forward to attending some of the upcoming events, hope things will be better. Thanks for letting me VENT. ERIC V DAVIS.
MARCUS MILLER HONORED MY SHOUT-OUT TO PLAY MY FAVORITE SONG FROM HIS RENAISSANCE CD "TIGHTROPE" AT S.P.A.C.E. he stated - Why would I ask for one of the songs they hadn't rehearsed, (LOL) then he asked my name and said they would only play just a little of it but ended up playing the entire song (M2 HEAVEN!!) - I hope they played it for the second show. I turned 51 last year and had a New Orleans themed b-day party and we were going to have a second line and it was the song I had choosen for the second line (until my friend leading the second line had hip surgery and we had to get a slower song)- we had a great time but I missed not having that song for the second line - let me tell you MARCUS MILLER MORE THAN MADE UP FOR WHAT I MISSED AT MY B-DAY PARTY THANK YOU MARCUS MILLER FOR MY BELATED BIRTHDAY SONG AND THANK YOU SPACE FOR PROVIDING SUCH AND AWESOME VENUE FOR SUCH AN AWESOME PERFORMER!!! LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT!!
From his first steps on stage to his last bow, Marcus Miller was the essence of cool. Bass antics and catchy riffs featured in the show, but were only part of what made the night great: Marcus' stage persona, stories, and interaction with his band of talented musicians made this a night to remember. I've never seen a band have so much fun on stage - there was constant interplay between each of the performers, and each of them was given plenty of time to display their considerable skills on their respective instruments. While there were a few songs I'd heard on older albums in the show, there was a focus on new material from his upcoming album.
I have no right words for the concert. The only word that came up to was extraterrestial.
Beside Marcus Miller himself, the strength are his musicians, who are each of them the best.
They play very tide alltogether, with a magnificent groove.
I also liked the concept of the new album Afrodeesia, which is a totally different one of Renaissance.
And of course there is Marcus himself, who has, unbelievebly, still even grown technically.
Who is always giving the best of himself and everything that is inside of him.
Thank you Marcus, Alex, Lee, Brett, Adam and Louis, you guys made my day, my week, my month, my year !
We saw the band playing in Paard van Troje in The Hague on October 24, 2017.
Although the show was good, the volume was way too high, even from the start!!
I really don't know why the technicians can't handle that, a well known artist like Marcus doesn't need all that volume and noise.
Even more, while he is playing base guitar most of the time, it would be more fun if his great sound wouldn't get lost in that blurring, growling base noise.
Last but not least I found that the band wasn't that eager to get the most out of the evening.
The audience felt that too, and responded likewise.
"World class showman. I've seen Marcus shows at least 12 times in the last 3 years and this show tonight was by far hands down the best I've seen him ever play and extraordinary show playing bass. I'm a drummer, and playing over 40yrs Marcus love for not only the music, but for the young cat's that tour with him to shine is so amazing. Having the audience involved was just great. I'm old school and listening to Stanley, Victor Eastman, Graham, i take nothing away from the cat's, Marcus is the man not only from this generation but from any plant.
Sempre grandissimo! Il solito uragano .
Mi sono piaciuti tutti ma in particolare modo il chitarrista... e anche il sassofonista.....
Poi il bis.. entusiasmante...
AL solito, quando capiterà ancora, tornerò ancora a vederlo !
I would just like to say that I wish the had never ended. It was excellence and the singer,
Larry Bragg was amazing. I will most definitely make sure the next time these guys are together, I will be in attendance.
