Singer songwriter Pete Murray first came to may attention whilst backpacking around Australia. He had just realised his 2nd album Feeler which proved to be a big success and it was hard to go anywhere in Australia at the that time without hearing his music. Most of his songs are simply produced and seemed quite cliche of allot of the music I was hearing in Australian around that time. I have to say he has a wonderful voice, slightly husky, deep and a brooding quality to his voice. There is no mistaking it!
I saw him live at a tiny venue in Sydney, I quite taken back by how small the venue was considering the fuss that was being made about him and the amount of radio time his songs were receiving. Somebody told me that he's happy playing to small numbers of people and isn’t interested in playing huge places and making lots of money. I was unsure whether this was true but it gave him an endearing quality all the same.
I was amazed by the clarity of his voice he sounded just like he does on record! He performed his biggest hits ‘Bail Me Out’ ‘Please’, ‘Feeler’ ‘Lines’ and finished of with ‘So Beautiful’. Much to the approval of some pretty girls sitting in front of me. He kept the crowd involved throughout by talking about what experiences created and inspired his songs and despite the gig being more laid back than I was expecting, it was an extremely enjoyable performance.
We love Pete Murray BUT not his recent concert at the Shoal Bay Country Club ... which is a complete misnomer, it is just a dingy nightclub, with no elegance or finesse. The venue was L-shaped, had a low ceiling, little seating and a stage that was barely raised, which ensured the sound quality was terrible. Too many people were already drunk and had little interest in the music, instead they talked loudly. One large woman apparently became unconscious near the stage and was unceremoniously carried out, at speed, by four security staff. Now before people accuse me of being a prude I don't have a problem with these sorts of venues, the security staff were friendly and engaged in their duties. But this is not a good venue for a quality artist. And calling it a Country Club is a complete fantasy, it is a pub, bistro come average nightclub. I also blame Pete Murray for not choosing a better venue, perhaps the money was too hard to refuse. After looking forward to this for more than 4 months, booking accommodation and travelling up from Newcastle, we left after four songs. Our anticipation for and the reality of this concert could not have been wider.
Fabulous gig, well attended by a knowledgeable crowd, a lot of joining in as so many knew the lyrics to many of his songs.
A great performer, very personable and at ease with the audience. Both his bass player and guitarist are great players too.
